This traditional salinity refractometer is designed for testing the concentration of salt water and brine and used for quality control in research and clinical laboratories and marine industry. Its scale provides a direct reading of the specific gravity and concentration (Parts per Thousand) of salt in water. This is a must have tool for any marine aquarium hobbyist, let us put it in common and simple words: it is highly accurate, simple and easy to use, durable, some might say it's more expensive that hydrometers...yes any brand of Refractometer will be more expensive than any brand of hydrometer but it's worth every single penny.
Hydrometers can provide very inaccurate readings, a simple set of micro bubbles attached to the needle can push it upwards and make you think that your salinity is correct while reality is that could be dangerously low.
This does not happen with Refractometers. By the time you rinse well your hydrometer, fill it up, remove the bubbles and wait till the needle points to the right value on the scale you could've done 5 tests with your Refractometer plus if you were not 100% sure your hydrometer gave you the right reading and want to do it again just to be sure... well... if it gives you the same reading you are lucky and you don't have to do it a third time! but if not...you'll go back to the start and try it again.
How it works: Just lift the sample lid and add a drop of water with the pipette (included) from your tank or from the water you are mixing with salt, close the lid and look thru the eye piece, you will see a white line in front of a blue background that will indicate your salinity concentration in the scale (see listing picture), that is your salinity reading!
Refractometers come calibrated but in case it needs re calibrating simply add a drop of distilled water and make sure the reading says 0 (ZERO) if it is not at Zero just use the screwdriver provided while looking on the eyepiece and turn screw so the line moves to the Zero mark and that's it! Spending a few more bucks on a Refractometer will save you time, can save the lives of corals and fish and will save you money in the short and long run.
